Nothing happens fast on Dartmoor and developing this website or rather the ideas behind it have taken a bit longer than planned. We first started selling our Whiteface Dartmoor lamb and hogget meat boxes to our friends a few years ago, although we only produced a handful we were delighted that they were so well received. Having enough animals to satisfy demand is a problem for small farmers, which often means that livestock are sold at market, prices can fluctuate and often do not reward the high welfare standards that smaller producers generally attain, they also do not reward the farmers for producing wholly grass-fed stock. It occurred to me that locally there are quite a few farmers that would like to sell their meat directly to customers but do not have the time or resources to do so, in fact I mentioned this to our forestry contractor who has a few fields and had bought 6 of our breeding Red Ruby cows and he agreed that it would be great if a resource was available to him to sell a beast directly rather than through market. It then occurred to me why limit this to just meat, across Dartmoor there are farmers and artisan producers making a range of products. Why not include some of these products in our boxes? Over the next weeks, months and years we will endeavour to root out these small producers and bring these products to your attention. Should be fun!
